Case Study: Memory Care and Technology

From March 2014-May 2016, Erin Kelsey and Erin Buerk began visiting the memory care wing
at a local nursing home with the goal of providing residents access to new technology and a fun
and engaging activity. Every other month for one hour, Erin and Erin would bring three library-owned
iPads loaded with specific apps and a WiFi hotspot (to ensure a good connection) for the
memory care program.
Both Erin and Erin worked with three to six residents each one hour session and it was their goal
to communicate with the nursing home staff to bring more residents along when one get tired.
Keeping this open communication with staff allowed Erin and Erin to interact with more residents
during their visit.
Currently the program is no longer being offered. Erin and Erin both obtained new positions.
Erin Kelsey is no longer at Worthington Libraries. Staffing levels did not allow the program to be
picked up by other interested staff members.
The Erin duo hosted a PLA webinar where more details about the program were discussed and
a list of recommended apps was shared.
